Fasting: The Health Tool Hiding in Plain Sight

If your energy crashes mind-afternoon...

If your brain feels foggy, your joints ache, or your weight won't budge no matter what you try...


It's probably not age or stress.

It could be that your body's overloaded - and has no time to reset.


This is where fasting (or what I often call time-restricted eating) becomes a game-changer.


Not because it's trendy or extreme... but because it works with how God designed your body to function.


THE PROBLEM: WE NEVER STOP EATING


Our modern world has made food constantly available - morning, noon, and night (literally). We eat:

  • breakfast before the sun comes up

  • snacks to power through the workday

  • dinner close to bedtime

  • and then maybe a little something sweet before the lights go out


That's 16+ hours of the day spent in digestive mode. Your body never gets the memo to pause. And when there's no pause, there's no cleansing, no healing, no recovery.


WHAT FASTING ACTUALLY DOES


Think of fasting like taking out the trash. Every cell in your body produces waste - it's normal. But when that waste builds up without being cleared, you feel it.

  • sluggishness

  • brain fog

  • low motivation

  • poor sleep

  • chronic inflammation


Fasting flips a switch in your body called autophagy - a built-in cleanup crew that clears damaged cells, reduces inflammation, and helps restore function from the inside out.


This is not starving yourself. It's creating intentional space for your body to breathe, detox, and heal.


WHY IT'S SO POWERFUL


Most people I know, including the men I coach, want three things:

  • more energy

  • less stubborn weight

  • clear focus to lead and love well


Fasting addresses all three... not by chasing the next fad diet, but by helping your body do what it was created to do.


When you fast, your body switches from constantly burning sugar to becoming metabolically flexible - burning fat more efficiently and stabilizing your energy levels throughout the day.


It's like your cells are finally able to take a deep breath and do their job again.


HOW TO GET STARTED (SAFELY)


Here's where I'll tell you - check with your doctor before making any big health changes, especially if you have chronic conditions or take medications.


But once you've got the green light, here are three beginner friendly ways to get started:

  • Try a 12:12 Window

    • Eat all your meals in a 12 hour window (say 8am to 8pm) and then fast the other 12. From there, you can gradually adjust to longer periods of fasting based on what works best for your body.

  • Hydrate Like it's Your Job

    • Fasting doesn't mean skipping water. In fact, you need more water to help flush out that cellular waste.

  • Pay Attention

    • Notice how your body responds... not just physically but mentally and emotionally too. Fasting often improves sleep, focus, and even mood.


BIBLICAL WELLNESS MATTERS


As a pastor and pharmacist, I believe your health is spiritual. Taking care of your body isn't vanity, it's stewardship. It's treating your body like the temple God says it is (1 Corinthians 6:19).
