Parenting in a Tech World

Parenting in a tech world is tough

Most parents assume the danger starts when their child gets a phone.

The reality?

Exposure often happens long before that.

In a recent conversation on The RevRx Podcast, Mandy Majors—founder of NextTalk—shared how her young child was exposed to graphic sexual content without owning a device at all. The moment reshaped how she thought about technology, parenting, and protection.

The Myth of “Total Control”

Many of us start with the same instinct:

Just block it. Just delay it. Just keep them away from it.

Those things matter—but they aren’t enough.

You can monitor devices.

You can install filters.

You can delay access.

But you cannot control every conversation, bus ride, classroom, or friend group.

The Shift That Changes Everything

Mandy describes a pivotal shift:

From trying to control everything...

to teaching kids how to protect their own hearts and minds.

That shift starts with trust.

When kids feel safe talking to you, they:

  • Ask instead of Googling

  • Confess instead of hiding

  • Learn discernment instead of secrecy

No app can replace that.

Teaching Tech Like Driving

One of the most helpful frameworks from this episode is simple:

Teach technology the way you teach driving.

You don’t start on the interstate.

You don’t hand over full access overnight.

You introduce responsibility in steps.

Phones. Apps. Social media.

All earned. All guided. All discussed.

Scripture Was Already Ahead of Us

Deuteronomy 6 doesn’t mention phones—but it nails the strategy:

Talk when you’re at home.

Talk when you’re on the go.

Talk when you lie down.

Talk when you get up.

A culture of ongoing conversation is the strongest form of protection we have.

The Bottom Line

Your kids will be exposed to things you didn’t plan for.

The question isn’t if.

It’s who they’ll talk to when it happens.

Be that person.
