Jesus > The American Dream

Where Do You Find Your Security?

If you would’ve asked me a few months ago where I found my security, I probably would’ve said, “In Jesus.” And I would’ve meant it.

But sometimes, it takes a shake-up in life to show us where our trust really lies.

Over the last several days, I’ve been wrestling with a reality I didn’t expect to face: the possibility of losing my job. As someone who works in a "secure" government position, that thought felt almost laughable—until recently. With sweeping federal changes and budget shifts, the once rock-solid stability of my role is now uncertain.

It’s exposed something in me.

I’ve realized how much security I’ve tied to the visible things. A good job. A steady paycheck. A work-from-home setup that lets me eat lunch with my three-year-old or walk barefoot through the garden on breaks. These comforts, these routines, these “certainties” have quietly become the bedrock of my peace.

But here’s the problem: none of it was ever truly secure.

We live in a world that trains us to chase security in tangible things. Degrees. Promotions. Retirement plans. The “American Dream.” We aim for a life where nothing is at risk, and we mistake that for peace. But when one of those pillars starts to wobble, the illusion cracks.

And that’s exactly what happened to me.

In this season, God’s been peeling back the layers and reminding me—nothing on this side of eternity is guaranteed. Not jobs. Not comfort. Not convenience. Not health. Not even the freedom to work from home.

But Jesus is.

His presence, His promises, His love—they don’t shift when economies crash or when offices reopen. He doesn’t fluctuate with government decisions or corporate restructures. He is the only constant.

That realization has pushed me to do more than just say, “Jesus is my security.” It’s challenged me to actually live like it.

That means doubling down on my relationship with Him—not just giving Him lip service while I build my peace on other foundations. It means carving out time in His Word, talking to Him daily, prioritizing His presence over my preferences. It means walking in peace when the future feels shaky, not because I know what’s next, but because I know Him.

I’m still committed to being the best employee, husband, and father I can be. But my sense of safety, my stability—it’s no longer rooted in whether I work from home or keep my job. It’s rooted in Jesus.

Because He’s the only One who won’t get cut.

Closing Thought:

If you’re reading this and feeling like your world is shaking—maybe it’s job stress, health struggles, or just the weight of a broken world—I want you to know you’re not alone. But more than that, I want to remind you that there’s one place you can plant your feet and not be moved.

It’s not in your job title, your bank account, or your circumstances. It’s in Jesus.

And He’s enough.
