Most of us will never step onto a Major League Baseball field... but that doesn't mean we can't learn from the ones who do. In my latest episode of The Rev Rx Podcast, I sat down with Kansas City Royals broadcaster Joel Goldberg, a man who's spent three decades behind the mic interviewing some of baseball's greatest names.
What we talked about wasn't stats or standings, but how 'America's Favorite Past-time' mirrors real life in a lot of ways. Here are some of the topics we discussed:
Rejection Isn't the End - It's the Beginning
Joel was rejected 25 times before getting his first job in broadcasting. He didn't give up - he got creative. He called TV stations direction. He showed up when others didn't.
Success Starts with Routine
The best athletes (and leaders) in the world don't rely on luck - they build systems. Routines. Habits. And they stick with them... especially when things aren't going well.
"What matters is the work... whether you're winning or not. That's what makes the difference."
Baseball Mirrors Life
Slumps. Setbacks. Highs and lows. Baseball teaches you how to fail well, keep showing up, and play the long game. We could learn a lot from that in life too.
"The best hitters fail 70% of the time. The key is that they don't let failure define them."
Your Story Can Change Someone Else's
Jose shared a moving story about former Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura- and young Dominican player who overcame fear of speaking English on live TV and inspired countless others. Even after his tragic passing, his legacy lives on - through the teammates he mentored and the impact he had on fans.
"He paved the way for others, that's what legacy looks like."
Your Platform Has a Purpose
Joel reminds us that no matter your role - dad, coach, husband, employee, friend - your work can be more than just a task. It can become your ministry and your purpose. Only you can do the things you're called to do.
"Look for the deeper meaning in what you're doing.. .there's always more if you're paying attention."
So whether you're in a slump or chasing your dream, keep showing up! Live with purpose! Play the long game! Just never, ever ever give up.
